Dryer vents should be 4 inches in diameter in order to properly connect to the back of the dryer. If your home has a 3 inch diameter vent, a reducer will physically connect, but dryer performance will suffer.‬ It is always best for both efficiency and safety to replace the venting with the proper size and type directed by code.
